![]() But there is considerable disagreement among scholars about whether Sappho's poems were for solo or choral performance. Like other poetry of her day, Sappho's was composed primarily for oral performance. Much of the fascination about Sappho over the centuries has been fueled by the fact that she is a woman addressing many of her love poems to other women, that we know almost nothing about her life, and that, in modern times, her poems survive mostly in fragments. While two hundred fragments have been attributed to Sappho, only two complete poems and approximately forty fragments survive. Ancient sources state that she produced nine volumes of poetry. ![]() Born at the close of the seventh century BCE, Sappho was famously declared the “Tenth Muse” by Plato. Our school system did not prepare many of our average students for being productive citizens they focused, until recently, on all students passing the A-G requirements so they could attend college not focusing on trades. What we are seeing is the result of lowered standards in our schools and in society. We are not addressing the underlying cause. What is proposed is like putting a Band-Aid on an infested sore. The city council and planning commission say they listen but proceed with their plans in spite of public pressure and concerns. ![]() The proposed building project will not come close to helping our homeless problem, but it will increase congestion, further damage our infrastructure, impact our grid, and water supply. We have expressed our concerns about how this dense housing/building is ruining the “vibe” of Ventura.
